WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE CHHA TRAINING PROGRAM?

A Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) certification in New Jersey requires completing 76 hours of a State-Approved CHHA Training Program. Of these 76 hours, 60 hours consist of classroom instruction and 16 hours consist of hands-on clinical practice. Students must also exhibit certain soft skills such as empathy to excel as a CHHA in the program, and beyond.

Core Content in Classroom Instruction 

The training program covers a variety of topics to effectively prepare the student in diverse patient situations. Each topic is reviewed in varying lengths ranging from nearly 30 minutes to 9 hours. Students will review basic medical terminology, safety and emergency procedures, body mechanics and mobility assistance, nutrition and meal preparation, patient rights and ethics, and proper communication skills. Hands-On Clinical Training

The clinical training allows the application of skills and knowledge gathered from classroom instruction. Training may include proper use of equipment as well as response to diverse patient situations. Practice skills may include:

  • Personal care assistance: bathing, grooming, and toileting patients

  • Monitoring vital signs: measuring and recording pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and respiration

  • Mobility Assistance: Safely helping patients with movement, repositioning, or transferring

  • Observation and Reporting: Efficiently recognize harmful changes in a patient’s condition and effectively report it to a supervisor


Soft Skills as a CHHA

To excel in the training program and beyond in the healthcare career, individuals must exhibit particular soft skills

  • Communication skills: Clearly relay information to patients, their families or loved ones, and medical professionals

  • Empathy and Compassion: Genuine care and concern for the patient and their loved ones establishes a better relationship and improves the experience for both patient and caretaker

  • Problem-solving: Quick assessment to take required action in diverse patient situations improves emergency mitigation 

  • Time Management: Effectively balance multiple responsibilities while taking care and monitoring the patient, and adapting to the patient’s schedule
